Welcome to Fat of the LAN

Fat of the LAN is your portal to useful open source information. This site is the culmination of my many hours of frustrating research while trying to implement open source solutions. I've gathered many of the useful tools and guides that I have found here to help others who are searching for the same information. I've also created a discussion forum so that information can be widely disseminated on a variety of topics that frankly, I feel is lacking elsewhere. But I need your help. If you have a question, please post it. No one will reply if you don't post, and if no one replys, no information is transfered, thus killing the spirit of open source software. I would also like any contributions that you feel would make a nice addition to the site. So go ahead and look around, and I hope that you find what you've been searching for.

Some of the highlights of Fat of the LAN:

  • Support without having to pay fees or banner adds.
  • The ability to discuss problems or ideas with others.
  • Pass along some vital information to people who need it.
  • Extensive documentation to allow for easy implementaion of your projects.

I hope you will enjoy using Fat of the LAN.

The Fat of the LAN team.

People's History
On a day like today, in:
1831 Silk workers' strike in Lyon, France, district de la Croix Rousse. The whole city rises in insurrection when Nationale Guard kills several workers.
1921 I.W.W. picketing miners massacred in Columbine, Colorado. (Yes, the same Columbine.)
1973 The Senate Watergate committee announces discovery of an 18 1/2 minute erasure on a tape of a Nixon-Haldeman conversation shortly after the Watergate break-in.
1981 More than 350,000 people protest in Holland against Reagan administration plans to deploy intermediate-range nuclear weapons in Europe.
1984 Three black activists refuse to leave South African Embassy, initiating months of civil disobedience.
1986 To protect Reagan from the exploding Iran arms-for-hostages scandal, Attorney General Ed Meese personally takes over the investigation (while tipping off National Security Advisor Poindexter, who notifies Oliver North ? North immediately begins destroying evidence); later that day Meese acts to keep the FBI out of the investigation despite his knowledge that, at least, the Arms Export Control Act had been violated.
1989 FMLN rebels in El Salvador trap US Green Berets troops in Sheraton Hotel in San Salvador.

Install Asterisk VOIP PBX on Debian.

I just added a new how-to on installing Asterisk on Debian Linux in a pure voice over IP environment.

It's a complete walk though on installing from source and configuring Asterisk to use Broadvoice as a VOIP gateway. You'll be up and making calls over the internet in no time

New Server, New Connection
Written by Tobias on June 6th 2005

Fat of the LAN Upgraded!

The Fat of the LAN server has been upgraded to a new Dell PowerEdge server. It is now also co-lo'd in a cabinet at Infinity Internet so things should be much faster now.

UPDATE - Well the server died today. I think the mainboard gacked, but fortunately I had another identical server on hand that hadn't gone out yet. Just swapped out the drives and put it back in the rack so Dell can repair this one. Expect an outage in a day or two.
