Q & A - Paper vs. Cloth Napkins?

December 17th, 2007 by Eve-Maridy

QUESTION:

I’m having a Christmas party at my home-for 50 guests, pretty but plastic plates for stand up appetizers-should I use cloth napkins or nice, paper napkins?

-Jody

ANSWER:

Hi, Jody~

If you are using plastic plates, it would be more typical to use a paper cocktail napkin as its accompaniment. However, this is definitely a situation where you can be the final judge.

Try placing the plastic plates and cloth napkins on your buffet and see how they look. Does it look odd having the two together? Than use the paper napkins. If it looks elegant, then go ahead and use the cloth napkins.

I would suggest that you use a high quality plastic plate in a festive color or design (gold edging on a white plate, or a red plate with green accents, etc.). Also, if you do use paper napkins, I would also suggest a high quality paper cocktail napkin that coordinates with the color of your plastic plates. It pays off immensely in elegance when you spend a bit more on the higher quality disposable items, if you choose to use them.

I hope this helps answer your question, but if not, please let me know how I can be of further assistance.

Happy holiday planning!
